      <text>After warm-up, have students practice making questions. Give an answer, then they ask the question. (Pair/small group work). Example: "He ate two hot dogs." (How many hot dogs did he eat?) "I drank some tea." (What did you drink?) "Yesterday I took a bus to school." (How did you get to school yesterday?) "I didn't come to school because I was sick." (Why didn't you come to school yesterday.) "I'm sorry, but Maria isn't here right now." (May I speak to Maria please.) "We played basketball after school." (What did you do after school?) "Her eyes are brown." (What color are her eyes?) "I'm going to stay home this weekend." (What are you going to do this weekend?) "He's selling tickets for tonight's basketball game." (What's he doing? What's he selling?) "A thief steals things." (What does a thief do?) etc. You can also divide the class into teams and have team A challenge team B to come up with a correct question for a team A' statement.</text>

      <hdr>Main Activity 1: Weather</hdr>
      <text>Describe different types of weather, including today's weather and yesterday's weather. Practice using the following vocabulary words: a warm coat; a rain coat; cloudy sky; clear sky; sunny sky; sunglasses; an umbrella; hot weather; thunder and lightning; wet (When it rains, people get wet.); dry (People use an umbrella to stay dry.); hot/warm/cool/cold (It's hotter today than it was yesterday.) Other examples: We need rain. It rains too much. It's too cold today. It's nice weather today. It's raining, but it's going to stop. I think it's going to start raining. I see some dark clouds in the sky. I hope it doesn't snow tomorrow. It's too cold to go outside. A typhoon is coming, so there will be no school tomorrow. In a typhoon there's a lot of rain and wind. Don't go outside when there's lightning. etc.</text>

    <group>
      <hdr>Main Activity 2: Dictation - Today's test</hdr>
      <text>Dictation: (1) Last night I stayed up late. (2) I didn't go to bed until midnight. (3) I had to study for a difficult science test. (4) It's going to be later today. (5) I think I'll do well, because I studied hard. Have the students check for accuracy and then summarize the dictation. Then ask follow-up questions like: 'Why did she stay up late last night?' 'What was she doing last night?' 'What time did she go to bed?' 'Why does she think she'll do well on the test?' 'When is she going to take the test?' "When is your next test?" "When was your last test?" "Did you stay up late the night before?" "What time did you go to bed?" "How did you do on the test?" "How do you think you'll do on your next test?" "Do you think you'll get the highest score?" etc.</text>

    <group>
      <hdr>Main Activity 3: Numerical Operations in English</hdr>
      <text>Do simple mental math problems. Do the problems orally without using text. Example problems: "What's 2 times 8?" "What's 8 divided by 4?" "What is three plus five plus two?" "What's 18 times 10?" "What's 25 times 4?" "What's a hundred divided by 2?" "What's 85 plus 5?" "What's one half of 50?" "What's two thirds of nine?" "What's 3 fifths plus 1 fifth?" "What's 0.5 plus 0.25?" "What's ten times 100?" "What's ten less than one hundred?" etc. Have the students dictate simple problems to each other. (to improve pronunciation and fluency)</text>

      <hdr>Main Activity 1: Dialog/Roleplay</hdr>
      <text>Practice in pairs and then role play Dialog 1 from Unit 8 or a variation. Then summarize the dialog: Judy and Maria both went to the library yesterday, but they didn't see each other. Judy was there from ten until ten thirty. Maria didn't get there until eleven. So they missed each other by half an hour. Go over these key expressions: (1) I was there in the morning, from ten to ten thirty. (2) I didn't get there until around eleven o'clock.</text>
    </group>
    <group>
      <hdr>Main Activity 2: Dictation - Last week's science test</hdr>
      <text>Dictation: (1) I didn't do well on last week's science test. (2) I got the lowest score in the class. (3) My teacher wrote a note to my parents. (4) This weekend I have to stay home and study. (5) I have to do better on the next test, so I'm going to study harder. Have the students check for accuracy and then summarize the dictation. Then ask follow-up questions like: 'When was the test?' 'What kind of test was it?' 'How did he/she do on the test?' 'What did the teacher do?' 'What does he/she have to do this weekend?' 'What is he/she going to do?' "When was your last science test?" "Did you study hard for it?" "How many hours did you study for it?" "Do you think you did your best?" "Do you have enough time to study each day?" "Do you think you get enough sleep each day?" "How many hours of sleep do you usually get?" "What other activities do you do?" etc.</text>
    </group>
    <group>
      <hdr>Main Activity 3: Numerical Relations - Ordering Game</hdr>
      <text>Give a list of 5 or more numbers and have students arrange them by following instructions. Example: Here is a sample list and instructions: [10, 15, 32, 37, 83] (1) Put the largest number on the left. (2) Put the second smallest number on the right. (3) Now draw a circle around the two smallest numbers. (4) Now draw a square around the numbers greater than 30. (5) Now draw little triangles under the 3 largest numbers. Compare your lists. What is the smallest number with a triangle under it? (32) What is the largest circled number? (15) etc. Be creative. Discuss the relationships. This exercise helps students learn how to follow instructions in English.</text>
